USA Rugby has announced a year-long celebration as it marks its 50th year as members, donors and fans will recount historical moments, along with opportunities to celebrate through events, memorabilia and philanthropic opportunities.
The first of these opportunities is a major gifts fundraising program, On The Team, which will provide funds to USA Rugby athletes and operations over the next four years. The organization began in June 1975 when four regional organizations across the country met in Chicago to form USA Rugby.
“In more ways than one, this is truly a benchmark year for USA Rugby,” said Bill Goren, USA Rugby chief executive officer. “With remarkable memories and momentum to look back on over the last half-century, there is much to celebrate together. In partnership with the USA Rugby community, we are thrilled to commemorate the last 50 years as we also salute the occasion with plans for positive growth over the next 50 years.”
Goren and USA Rugby have announced the assembly of a 50th Anniversary Committee, comprised of influential supporters, with the aim of developing the philanthropic efforts of the organization. USA Rugby board member and Eagle alum Denis Shanagher will lead the committee. USA Rugby founding member Bob Watkins will serve as co-chairman for a 50th Anniversary Gala Committee.
“Being a part of the union’s establishment was a special experience in Chicago 1975, an occasion that has evolved in significance over the last 50 years,” Watkins said. “USA Rugby’s community of hard-working contributors have shaped the game we know today, a game we’re pleased to celebrate and most importantly invest in for further growth.”
USA Rugby fans can join the festivities through a content series throughout the year, looking back on important moments in the organization’s history. Special merchandise celebrating the 50th anniversary will be available this spring through World Rugby Shop.
