Monica Crowley, who served as the assistant secretary of the treasury for public affairs during the first Trump Administration, has been announced as the next Ambassador, Assistant Secretary of State and Chief of Protocol of the United States of America and will be a key liaison for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Summer Games in Los Angeles.
President-elect Donald Trump made the announcement this week. Crowley will be a contact for FIFA and for the LA28 organizing committee in Los Angeles, as well as multiple Southern California governmental agencies coordinating services surrounding the Games.
The Sports Examiner reported this week that one of Crowley’s first initiatives will be the request of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Agency for $3.2 billion in support for 2028 Olympic-related projects.
The Biden Administration designated the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games as a “National Special Security Event” in June 2024. The U.S. Secret Service will be the lead agency for the event’s operational security plan.
In August, United States Senators Amy Klobuchar (D-Minnesota) and Jerry Moran (R-Kansas), co-chairs of the Senate Travel and Tourism Caucus, led a bipartisan group of 19 senators in calling for Biden to establish a White House Task Force on Global Sporting Events.
