Spokane Sports has been awarded a $26,000 Community Ties Giving Program Local Grant from the Union Pacific Foundation to support the construction of a distinctive finish-line arch at the future cross course in Spokane Valley.
Phase I construction on the cross course, a collaboration between Spokane Sports and the city of Spokane Valley, began in September 2024 with completion scheduled for fall 2025. The venue is set to become a destination for cross-country running and cyclocross events.
The finish-line arch will serve as a focal point for athletes and spectators, enhancing the course’s appeal and functionality.
“Union Pacific’s support is invaluable in helping us realize the vision of a world-class cross course in Spokane Valley. This project will not only bring national events to the region but also foster community engagement and outdoor recreation,” said Marit Jacobs, director of business development.
The cross course in Spokane Valley comprises 46 acres of land owned by the city and 16 acres of land owned by Washington State Parks. The venue has been selected to host the 2027 Division I Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Regional and the NWAC Cross Country Championships for a three-year rotation from 2025–2027.
“Local grants have the power to create meaningful change within the communities our tracks touch,” said Beth Whited, Union Pacific President and Union Pacific Foundation president. “We are proud to partner with nonprofit organizations who are making an impact on the future — creating safer places for children and families; bringing economic prosperity to communities; building vibrant, inclusive areas for people to thrive; and instilling sustainable practices.”
