The Lansing Sports Commission has announced its inaugural FIERCE (Females Ignite, Empower, Respect, Collaborate and Engage) Women in Sports event on February 5, National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
FIERCE will take place from 8:30–11:30 a.m. at the MSU Federal Credit Union Headquarters Building in East Lansing. There is no charge, but attendees must RSVP for the event. The event features presentations from Michigan State women’s basketball coach Robyn Fralick and Dr. Ashleigh Huffman, an ESPN Stuart Scott Humanitarian Award Recipient.
“We’re thrilled to launch FIERCE and honor the incredible contributions of girls and women in sports,” said Meghan Ziehmer, executive director of the Lansing Sports Commission. “We can’t wait to hear from these two remarkable women about the power of mentorship and how sport can serve as a universal language to bring people together.”
Fralick is in her second season as Michigan State’s women’s basketball head coach. In her first season, she led the Spartans to a 22-9 record and a spot in the NCAA Tournament. Previously, Fralick spent five years at Bowling Green, where she achieved a 88-73 record.
Huffman is the vice president of global engagement at the Institute for Sport and Social Justice and the former chief of sports diplomacy at the U.S. Department of State. She has served as an advisor on international sport policy and overseen world championships, the Olympics and Paralympics and the World Cup. Huffman was awarded the ESPN Stuart Scott Humanitarian Award, which recognizes positive impact on women and girls and persons with disabilities.
