The annual Ice Breaker Tournament that serves as the start of college hockey season will be held at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Arizona, in 2025 with Arizona State hosting for the first time.
Alaska, Notre Dame, and Quinnipiac will also compete in the event, scheduled for October 10-11. The Ice Breaker Tournament, which began in 1997, brings together four teams, typically from different conferences. Omaha used a pair of overtime wins against Massachusetts and Minnesota to capture the 2024 Ice Breaker at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
Entering Wednesday, Quinnipiac and Arizona State are ranked in the Top 25 nationally.
“The addition of Arizona State University men’s hockey has been a tremendous success and we hoped to one day have the Ice Breaker tournament in Tempe,” said College Hockey Inc. Executive Director Sean Hogan. “Four of the top programs in the country competing in one of the best buildings in college hockey will be a great way to kick off the 2025-26 season.”
Boston College, Boston University and Minnesota have won the event the most times at three apiece.
“The Ice Breaker Tournament is an excellent experience for ASU fans and students to enjoy elite competition on the ice while increasing the footprint of Arizona State hockey on a national scale,” said Sun Devil Athletics Director Graham Rossini.
