The United States Olympic Committee has announced the schedule for the 2019 Team USA Champion Series, presented by Xfinity. The series includes eight events (six national championships and two international competitions) that will highlight eight Olympic sports: beach volleyball, diving, gymnastics, swimming, track and field, figure skating, ice hockey and luge.
“The Champions Series is an important initiative to increase Olympic excitement in non-Games years, and to showcase Team USA’s hardworking athletes and the fantastic events put on by our national governing bodies,” said Brian Gordon, senior vice president of marketing and media at the USOC. “Our athletes are training and preparing every day in order to compete at the highest level on behalf of the United States, and the Team USA Champions Series, presented by Xfinity, provides fans with a year-round look into the personal lives and competitive journeys of these inspiring athletes.”
The series will begin with the Geico U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit January 18–27 and conclude with the USA Hockey women’s national team game on December 14. The series will be broadcast on NBC Sports and NBC Sports Network starting on January 24 with the U.S. Figure Skating championships, which will serve as the final qualifying event prior to selecting the teams for the U.S. World Championships and International Skating Union Four Continents Championships.
Other qualifying events in the Champion Series include the USA Diving Senior National Championships, which will serve as the selection event for divers to qualify for the 2019 Pan American Games Team, the 2019 World Championships Team and selected grand prix competitions; the Toyota USA Track & Field Outdoor Championships, which will serve as USATF’s qualifying event for the 2019 IAAF World Championships; the Phillips 66 National Championships, which will allow swimmers to post qualifying times for the 2019–2020 USA Swimming National Team as well as 18-and-under swimmers to earn a spot at the 2019 FINA World Junior Championships; and the U.S Gymnastics Championships will feature the country’s best gymnasts vying for the men’s and women’s U.S. titles and U.S. National Teams for the junior and senior elite levels.
In addition to Xfinity serving as a presenting sponsor of the series, Bridgestone will serve as associate sponsor.
